On this Wednesday, October 2, the Madrid Protocol became effective in Brazil, in cooperation with the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI).

The accession of Brazil to the Madrid System will open the possibility to Brazilian trademark owners to protect their trademarks in the other 120-member countries of the System by filing a single international application and paying a single set of fees.

It is important to emphasize that each country will examine the request according to its own legislation, respecting national sovereignty.

The entry into force of the Madrid Protocol streamlines the process of obtaining and managing trademark registrations in the member countries desired by the trademark owner, allowing a time and funds savings.
